If there were a class in school called Life 101, I would focus on topics associated with the real world and situations people find themselves in once leaving home and metaphorically “starting their own life”. One portion of the class would be dedicated to teaching the class practical skills needed for living on your own, such as properly budgeting money, managing their time, and study skills needed for college. To do this, the students would be given real life situations and budgets, and figure out how to manage them. I would also bring in speakers such as college graduates, and have them talk about what to expect and teach important and useful habits.
The next portion would be dedicated to helping each student discover what they want to do in life and what they ultimately want their life to mean. While the skills above are important for success, the belief in oneself and acknowledgment of one’s dreams are crucial for living a happy life devoted to what you love. For this part of the class, I would hire inspirational speakers and admirable individuals who have fully lived out their life and those with wisdom to inspire students. In addition, I would bring in cancer survivors and other people who have faced unbelievable suffering. This would not only help students be grateful for what they have, but also teach them about suffering and how to handle when something awful comes into your life. While there are many “life lessons” that could be involved in the class, I believe these few topics are most important and would help students prepare for their life ahead of them.
